When I suggested writing about the garbage disposal, my editor gave me the go-ahead. To save you from headaches, we turned to a professional.

Savvy Shopping

"People try to save money on a garbage disposal and buy a cheap one," says Michael Tortomase, vice president and general manager of a heating, air, and plumbing business in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. "It never really performs the way it needs to, and that leads to trouble."

He says you're better off paying between $400 and $500 (including installation) for a garbage disposal with a ½- to ¾-horsepower motor. (Costs vary based on the region in which you live.)

What To Look For

Before you shop, do your research, and you'll end up with a wise buy. Here's what to look for.

* Rpm: Revolutions per minute tells you how fast your garbage disposal's blades turn. This translates into how fine the food gets chopped up before traveling down your drain. A unit that runs at 2,600 rpm is desirable.

* Blades: Choose a disposal with stainless steel grinding components. It will last longer and work more efficiently.

* Noise control: You'll be grateful you purchased a unit with sound insulation when your spouse is grinding up leftovers while you're trying to talk on the telephone.

The Don'ts

Once you have a garbage disposal, the next step is to treat it right. Among things you should never put down the disposal: oyster shells, clam shells, glass, plastic, whole bones, and metal bottle caps. Common sense, right? Wrong.

"People break glasses in the kitchen and wash everything down the drain," says Michael. Other don'ts include stringy vegetables, such as celery; fibrous material, such as whole corn husks; shrimp peels; rice and pasta; hot grease or other extremely hot liquids.

The Dos

When running the disposal, always run cool water. It keeps food and fat solid so the disposal can wash the particles away. Hot water can melt fat, which will get far down the drain line before gelling again and becoming a clog.

Only use garbage disposal cleaner; never use drain cleaner. Another option for reducing odor is to grind lemon and lime peels. Grinding ice helps blades stay sharp and clean.

Copyright Southern Progress Corporation Apr 2005
Provided by ProQuest Information and Learning Company. Liebeler lives in the Minneapolis area.

Resume: Liebeler began her television career by serving as a co-host for PBS' "Hometime" for five years. She also has appeared on TLC's "Home Savvy," HGTV's "Room for Change" and the Travel Channel's "Passport to Design." She's now working on a personal project, remodeling a bathroom in her home, which is being filmed by "Hometime" for airing in February.

Quote: "People are making the interiors of their bathrooms more beautiful and more upscale than they were in the past."

Q: What advice do you have for consumers on the verge of a bathroom remodeling project?

A: Start out by knowing what you want. Ask yourself how extensive you want the remodeling project to be. Can you live with the existing square footage, or do you need to bust out some walls and expand it? The trend in bathroom size is bigger, bigger, bigger.

Next, figure out what amenities you want in the space. There's a trend toward amping up and ramping up plumbing amenities. I'm seeing more steam showers and separate shower and tub areas. It's common now for a couple to have two sinks plus a vanity area for putting on makeup and getting ready.

I'm also seeing more interesting tile work in bathrooms. Tile is being used to make art.

People are making the interiors of their bathrooms more beautiful and more upscale than they were in the past. People used to just use bathrooms for their basic functions. Bathrooms weren't retreats, but now they are.

If you're working with limited space, I recommend getting a designer involved. A designer may be able to help you arrange your space better so that it's better used.

In my bathroom, we're changing the orientation of the bathtub. Some design solutions -- such as having a glass surround for your shower -- can make your space look larger.

Older homes often have a window located over the bathtub. If you have a shower installed above the bathtub, you've got to find a way to make sure the jam of that window doesn't rot out from all the moisture. If you don't need the window to be operational, one solution is to seal the whole window to make it water-tight.

Q: What new trends have you noticed in bathroom design?

A: In upscale bathrooms, I've noticed a trend toward having radiant floor heat and heated towel bars.

I've been seeing a lot of wood cabinetry in stains and colors that are new for the bathroom.

I'm having wood cabinets installed in a very dark, espresso color. I love the warmth that the wood adds to the space.

I think people used to be afraid of putting too much wood in a bathroom. They were concerned about all the moisture in the space. With the ventilation systems in most homes today, that's no longer a concern.

My designer is actually installing a kitchen cabinet -- one designed to go over a refrigerator -- in my bathroom. It's going to function as a vanity, floating 18 inches above the floor.

Rope lighting is being installed underneath the cabinet to reflect soft lighting off the tile floor. Having that open space underneath the vanity makes the room look larger.

Q: Can you share some pointers for remodeling on a tight budget?

A: You can have your porcelain tub professionally refinished. If it's in bad shape, you can get an acrylic overlay to cover it. There are services available that come in and measure your tub and the surround area and then install an overlay that exactly fits the tub. It gives you a nice new, clean look.

If you can live with your sink, then you can get a new look by replacing your countertop.
Paint is an inexpensive option for adding color.

Don't forget about flooring. Especially in older, smaller bathrooms, you don't have that much space to cover, so new flooring can be really affordable. Installing a tile floor is a pretty easy do-it-yourself project.

Q: When is professional help called for?

A: It depends on how extensive your bathroom remodeling job is going to be. If it is extensive, you have to figure out whether you want to be the general contractor for the project. Do you have the time to stay home and wait for an inspector to come by to check on plumbing or wiring?

If it's a cosmetic face-lift, then you can probably do it yourself. If it's more than that, I'd consider hiring professionals to do the work.

Start by talking with your neighbors and asking them who they used and had good experiences with. Ask for the name of the contractor who installed the tile in their bathroom or who put in their new shower.

Then you want to ask the contractor some questions. It's always good if you can find someone who is licensed, bonded and insured.

Bathroom Suppliers:

Glass Sinks

Bathroom Vanities

Give Your Kitchen a Facelift

Planning to remodel your kitchen this year or change
kitchen sink? If so, you’re in good company. According to a recent survey
done by the National Association of Realtors, 22 percent of first-time
homebuyers and 11 percent of repeat buyers are planning kitchen projects this
year. The remodeling industry can thank the country’s rapidly aging housing
stock for the expected increase in business. Homes that were built in the 1980s
are now hitting the typical 25- to 30-year life cycle in which improvements
begin to be needed.

If you’re among the thousands of Americans planning a kitchen remodel this year,
a good place to start is by formulating a budget. According to the National
Kitchen and Bath Association, the average kitchen remodel costs about $27,000.

Here’s a look at the breakdown as compiled by Remodeling Magazine’s annual “Cost
Versus Value Report.” A new sink will run you between $100 to $200 for stainless
steel and $200 to $2,000 for cast iron. Faucets cost between $60 and $100 for a
basic chrome, two-handle faucet to $300 and more for faucets with increased
functionality features or high-end finishes, such as nickel or bronze.

You can expect countertops to account for between $2,000 and $6,000 of your
budget. Laminate and ceramic tile typically costs $10 to $50 per square foot;
solid-surfacing or engineered stone between $100 and $200 per square foot;
natural stones, such as marble or granite $150 and up per square foot.

Depending on which appliances you plan to replace, they can cost from $350 for a
new state-of-the-art microwave to $3,500 for a new, top-of-the-line
refrigerator. You also have to take into account the costs of re-doing the
electrical, moving pipes if necessary and the cost of labor for the
installation.

But by far, one of the biggest expenses you’ll face will be replacing the
kitchen cabinets. They could easily
account for half your budget. When it comes to replacement cabinets, stock are
the most inexpensive way to go. They cost $50 to $200 per linear foot, and are
available right off the shelf at your local home improvement store. Style
options and features are limited, and because they only come in a few select
sizes, they rarely work in a remodeling situation. Out of frustration, a lot of
people immediately start looking into custom cabinets, which can cost up to five
times more; but there is a more prudent option.

You can specify semi-custom cabinets, which are manufactured to buyer
specifications for size and interior fittings. These days, one brand that’s
getting a lot of attention from builders and home remodelers is Canac.

“What sets this brand apart is the method of construction,” says company
spokesman, Mark Johansen. “Canac’s construction method provides full-access to
the space inside because these cabinets are constructed without face frames. The
drawers are inherently wider, offering considerably more storage space over
framed cabinets. Access to larger items, like pots and pans, is not hindered by
structural obstructions, meaning users don’t have to reach around center stiles
or over face frames in a cumbersome manner to remove larger items.”

Full-access cabinets have the added benefit of being easier to clean. There are
no corners or crevices, so dirt, dust and crumbs that tend to collect on other
styles of cabinets are all but eliminated.

Canac offers more than 50 different cabinet styles and more than 400 door
style/color combinations as well as myriad accessories to personalize your
kitchen or other livable space in the home. “Full-access cabinets are design
neutral, meaning Canac can create kitchens that include great detailing and
decorative accessories typical of a traditional kitchen or something quite
minimal and contemporary in appearance,” adds Johansen.

Almost all of Canac’s cabinetry is sold direct to new home builders and
remodelers through an exclusive associate dealer network and corporate showrooms
across North America.
